More leftovers & links

ᐅ Every time you hit the space bar, you get a new cute dog video. This is why Tim Berners-Lee and Al Gore worked so hard to invent the internet.

ᐅ Gotta love the classics: Dancing Paul still has all the moves.

How dare you be black in San Francisco’s Pacific Heights neighborhood!

ᐅ From childhood, baseball was my favorite sport to follow and watch, but I drifted away during the strikes and steroids era. Now a new form of cheating is rampant in MLB.

ᐅ I enjoyed this visit to the annual communist world’s fairs of the 1960s and ‘70s.

ᐅ I’m now permanently banned from Reddit. Their notification says, “Your account has been permanently suspended for breaking the rules.” It doesn’t say which rules, and all I’ve done on Reddit recently is post links to here. Maybe so much self-linking isn’t allowed? Que sera sera — Reddit was fun, but I was mostly gone anyway.

ᐅ After my second jab today, in two weeks I’ll be protected from the dreaded and dratted COVID. Most of the theaters are open, and I was thinking I’d go to a movie, but then I remembered the ads. You buy a ticket, buy a popcorn, and endure being advertised at for ten or twenty minutes before the movie starts. I do hope the cinemas survive, but I’m not going back to the ads.

ᐅ Last summer, the city where I live painted 'BLACK LIVES MATTER' in huge letters across the busiest street downtown, ironically where the street runs between Police Headquarters and the County Courthouse. Since then, traffic has faded the message so nobody could read it unless they already know what it says. If black lives matter enough to be painted on the street, it needs to be maintained with a fresh coat of paint every six months.

ᐅ I’ve never seen any of the Lord of the Rings movies, and I’m not interested in the remastered versions either, but I endorse this guy’s curmudgeonly perspective.

You and I both know that doctoring baseballs is as old as the sport itself. *Everyone* knew Gaylord Perry was a cheater.

  2. Perry played for my hometown team, and he was a favorite of mine. He was a cheater, sure, but spitballing is all-natural. I don't fully even understand what's involved with this wacky resin and glue trick.

"Spitball" is just a term for "doctored pitch."

Perry reportedly approached the makers of Vaseline about endorsing the product and was allegedly rebuffed with a one-line postcard reading, "We soothe babies' backsides, not baseballs." Former manager Gene Mauch famously quipped "He should be in the Hall of Fame with a tube of K-Y Jelly attached to his plaque."

  4. Allowed and encouraged, and that's a good article about a great dame. It's crazy to think a judge could send a woman to jail for wearing pants.

“Listen, I’ve worn slacks since I was 15,” she said. “I don’t own a dress except a formal. If he wants me to appear in a formal gown that’s okay with me. I’ll come back in slacks and if he puts me in jail I hope it will help to free women forever of anti-slackism.”
