Unsubscribe

About twice a week, software on the site sends email notifications about recent posts, to anyone who’s signed up (click ‘subscribe’ at the top of the page, if you’d like). When people un-subscribe, the software sends me an email, though I don’t know why — it doesn’t even tell me who unsubscribed. It only says, “A reader has unsubscribed.”

I mention this because *three* unsubscribe notifications arrived in short order after publishing “Am I the asshole?” on September 26. So I guess the answer was yes. There are only about 20 people signed up for notifications, so three cancelled subscriptions is a lot, but I couldn’t be happier about it! Buh-bye, buh-bye, buh-bye!
See, the whole point of being (almost) entirely honest here — the reason this website exists — is to find a few friends or faux friends who know me and accept me as I actually am. No facades. This site is me. I write it for myself, and for anyone who enjoys reading it. Shaking off people who can’t handle that is a good thing.
♦ ♦ ♦     As I get older and crankier, I’m less and less willing to compromise. I’m frickin’ sick of compromise.
All my life, my life took second place behind a job. Now that I’m retired I want to do what I want to do, not what someone else wants me to do.
Here, let me tell you a story:My mom lives with my sister Katrina, and Katrina will be out of town for a few days next week, so I volunteered to take a bus ride over, bring sandwiches and a two-liter soda, and have lunch with Mom at her house one day.She texted me, Oh, why don’t we go out to lunch instead?I replied, Love to, but I don’t have a car, and you won’t take the bus.Silence for ten minutes, and then she texted me again, and said she’d invited my brother Dick and his wife Young-sook to join us. Problem solved, she said. Dick will drive us all to a restaurant.Which changed everything, but not in a good way. Dick will want to eat at a chain place, where he’ll treat the waitress rudely, and talk about how great Trump is. Young-sook barely speaks English, so I never know what to say, except, Please don’t put your hands in my food.I love Dick, and I’ve even gotten used to Young-sook, but without asking, Mom had changed my offer of a fairly easy 3-bus cross-town ride and lunch, into a less enjoyable and undoubtedly much longer afternoon. To Mom I texted, I’d really rather bring you a nice deli sandwich. Just you and me. If you want to get out of the house, we could walk to the park a block away.Mom replied, Oh, I’d so much rather have Dick and Young-sook along, and go to Applebee’s.Which is the point where I’m supposed to be a good kid, even in my mid-60s, and compromise. Or more accurately, give in.But my answer was, Well, have a real nice lunch with Dick and Young-sook at Applebee’s.♦ ♦ ♦     My other brother Clay has invited me to visit at his house next weekend, and watch a baseball playoff game. He lives in the next county, 40 miles from me and 15 miles from the nearest bus stop, so I’ll need a lift. Which means I must compromise on what time I get there, how long I stay, and when I leave.I especially hate compromising on when I leave. By nature I’m an introvert, and when I’ve run low on sociability, I want to be gone. But instead I gotta ask my lift, “Can we go now?” and hope my lift doesn’t say, “Oh, let’s play one more quick game of Parcheesi.”When we finally drive away, I have to converse in the car for the entire ride, which was difficult on the way over, and it’s more difficult on the way back, after several hours of conversing with everyone at Clay’s house. It’s my nature: There’s a low limit to how long I can talk with people, even family.
Factor in also, that I’m car-phobic and viscerally hate even getting into any automobile that’s not a bus.On the plus side, of course, I love Clay, and his wife speaks English and hardly ever puts her hands in my food. And baseball is the only sport I have any slight interest in.But watching baseball on TV is like being insulted for three hours. There are ads between innings, sure, but you can mute the telly. There are also, though, ads during the game itself — the score isn’t the score, it’s the [Name of Bank] score, and this stolen base replay is brought to you by Re/Max, and special effects will insert a fast-food logo onto the pitcher’s mound, with another company’s branding projected behind the batter. Most of the game is advertising, and I frickin’ hate advertising, more than I care about who wins any game.So when Clay invites me to his house to watch a ball game, almost always my answer is no. He’s my bro, though, so twice a year I say yes. Next year I’m cutting back to once.♦ ♦ ♦     My wife is dead, as are most of my closest friends. Of my two living long-time buddies, one’s gone all QAnon, and the other is so apolitical we can’t talk about much more than baseball and old times. So a few weeks ago, I published a personal ad at Craigslist, not looking for romance. All I’d like is someone to join me for breakfast or a burger once in a while, or a game of chess, or some light conversation.Craigslist being what it is, the listing earned a dozen emailed come-ons from horny men — “Send a picture, maybe without pants,” etc — but it also brought three email exchanges with people who didn’t seem sketchy or skanky. One of those three replies vanished after I mentioned my politics and atheism. The other two, I stopped responding when one mentioned being an usher and elder at his church, and the other said what a boondoggle public transit is, after I’d mentioned taking the bus.In a word: NO. I’d like someone to talk with, but I’m not so desperate I’ll settle for someone I won’t like.So I’m alone 365 days a year, but I don’t wonder why, and I’m not complaining. I prefer being alone, over spending time with people who annoy me, and let’s be frank: Most people annoy me.If that’s something you can’t understand, no problem. Here is a horribly preserved actual TV broadcast in an undisclosed northern European country of a fine tune called Crystal Liaison but a young group called The Fugs. I wish you well.

That's really righteous. I love the part where the singer goes yadda-yadda-ye at!

And here's what Crystal Liaison sounds like when all dressed up and ready for mass distribution:

You just can't find this stuff on 45s. You gots to have a modest album collection. Of course nowdays you mostly need youtube and a pair of pretty good cans.

Both great, but overall I prefer the unpolished version.

And I have no idea which Fugs songs I've sent in this barrage. Short term memory is the second thing to go. So, sorry if I recently sent you Wide, Wide River, but it IS worth hearing twice.

Already liked the Fugs, but I'm liking the Fugs more. They're sure perfect for this morning.

And our Saturday special includes another Fugs tune (same album as all the rest: I'm gonna get you to buy the fuckin' album) "Life is Strange". Of course, I might have already posted it; I'm a little lost in your new format, but I'll abide.

And you don't need to hear this from me, but . . . it's nice that you stay in touch with your nuclear family, but mistreating wait staff makes you an asshole, no matter who your brother is. If it happens once every five years, that might mean you found a dick of a waiter, but if it happens predictably, it's asshole time. Sorry.

It's the only moment in life when he gets to be "the boss," and he's really not a very good boss. Not quite a tyrant, but demanding — he expects things done his way and immediately.

It's not so harsh it makes him an asshole, but he's MAGA so …

Sorry, Doug, I obviously don't know your brother and shouldn't be calling him names. My wife was a waitress for several years and got bullied occasionally by customers. I'm a little sensitive about how wait people get treated.

I've been wondering much the same, since moving back and becoming part of the family again, but I can't even guess. Certainly I lived a different and (for some years anyway) more bizarre life than my siblings ever did, and it made me who I am, but I never fit in with 'em really, or with anyone really. That's why I left.

The problem with MOST mailing lists is they do not provide the option to change over to a different email address. So you have no choice but to unsubscribe from your present email. Then you gotta re-subscribe with a new address. That is what I did recently: switched my subscription from my Gmail addie to one I have at Protonmail. So I just might number among those three unsubscribers. Or I might be all three of 'em due to some difficulties in the process of changing email addresses. This does not excuse Google from being so sloppy and unhelpful when it comes to subscription matters.

    Dougles,

Just to unFug you for a moment, as you might recall, I'm a long-time Mary Lou Lord fan. This is a Nick Saloman song that she sings wonderfully with her thrown-together band. The audio is a little garbled, so I'll include the lyrics.

Lights Are Changing, sung by Mary Lou Lord and her thrown-together band.

Disappearing out of sight along the open road
Into indistinct horizons I had no time to reload
Like a silver bullet from a gun an arrow from a bow
Like an equine star you'll hear about it
    Everywhere you go
All through nebula I was racing in my mind
I tripped the light fantastic and never looked behind
You slow down You slow down
    Lights are changing
You slow down You slow down
    Lights are changing
You fly so high and move so fast
You're running blindly from the past
    Slow down You slow down
    When lights are changing
Looking through your hollow eyes across the great unknown
Growing greater every second growing harder with each stone
Yeah and you who judge your freedom by the quantity you score
Does it make you any freer if you took a little more
All that summertime I revolved around your eye
In accelerating spirals in an asymmetric sky
You slow down You slow down
    Lights are changing
You slow down You slow down
    Lights are changing
You fly so high yeah and you move so fast
You're running blindly from the past
    Slow down You slow down
    Lights are changing
    Oh changing all the time
    Oh changing all the time
Now you slow down You slow down
    Lights are changing
You slow down You slow down
    Lights are changing
You fly so high and you move so fast
You're running blindly from the past
    Slow down You slow down
    Lights are changing
You slow down You slow down lights are changing

As you might recall, Mary Lou Lord spent a decade before she played anywhere besides the Boston underground (subway) and the London underground (also subway) passing the had for an occasional meal. The Kurt Cobain heard her and she got a contract with his label.

Then the horrible woman who married Kurt demanded that the contract be voided. It was, as was Kurt.

But you skipped the happy ending, that Mary Lou and Courtney became best buddies and toured together for years and years.

I mentioned years ago that I read a book about the founding of the Experience Music Project facilities and artifacts. Ms Love was repeatedly characterized as a horrible pain in the ass and a terrible person. I hear she married an Aberdeen boy and had him eliminated. By coincidence, the EMP was also eliminated and replaced with glitz so that people from Indiana could understand it. Hoosier partner?

      jtb

    3. Doug Holland Avatar

I've never met Ms Love, neither a fan nor anti-fan, and haven't read a book about her, but I'm skeptical that she's killed anyone. Have you taken the evidence to the cops?

When I first came back to Seattle, I looked at ticket prices and info about the former EMP, now redubbed the Museum of Pop Culture. Haven't yet gone, or had much hankering to. Have you? Am I missing out?

    4. johnthebasket Avatar
      johnthebasket

I'm a Hendrix fan as you will know, but I never made it to the EMP. Now I never will. I think Paul Allen was in it for the music. His sis, not so much. And that might be OK. Art should probably be disposable. Hendrix had a short career and was steering out of control the last couple of years. He's important to my generation, but likely not Jody's.

And museums probably shouldn't let themselves get dusty, unless it's dusty Springfield. I have a rap about this, but I won't bore you with it. We'll let Jimi rest in peace and try to ignore all the digital reproductions of the 60s.

      John

    5. Doug Holland Avatar

My wife go me into the museum habit, so it's in me for forever. Not nearly as heartening for the mind and soul when I'm alone, but still I go. To other museums, that is, not MoPOP. You know I'm not so huge on music — I certainly appreciate Bill Haley and the Comets or whatever, but I'm not paying $23 to see Bill Haley's guitar.

    6. johnthebasket Avatar
      johnthebasket

MoPOP, besides being a terrible name for a museum, is now, I believe, only peripherally a music museum. Somebody thinks pop culture broadly deserves a museum, and they have the dough to fund it. The musical instruments, which were only a subset of the original EMP, have been further subsumed by the culture that gave rise to them. I would argue that Jimi and the other revolutionary musicians of the decade of rock (1962-1971) probably deserve a museum of some kind: virtual or brick & mortar, but my perception is that MoPOP is also focused on the Hula Hoop, or whatever typified the time when Jody was a lassie. I don't recall Alvin and the Chipmunks performing Foxy Lady while hooping.

Nothing abides, everything's changing, but change is not progress, it's just re-arranging.

      John

    7. Doug Holland Avatar

      Truth, as usual.

My recollection is that in addition to Bill Haley's guitar and maybe Jimi Hendrix's tennis shoes, it's also all about science fiction, so you could see a prototype of Nurse Chappel's 1966 tricorder, but again, I shrug. For $23 less, I can take a bus ride to see Mr Hendrix's gravesite — it's at the same cemetery where my pop now reclines, though Jimi was there first.

    8. johnthebasket Avatar
      johnthebasket

Well, we can honor them both. Jimi could play the guitar with his teeth, but I never heard him yodel. Each life has value; each moment should be cherished.

And I need to plead guilty of petit theft and mopery. I stole the last two words of my last comment from square dancing. My parents were square dancers when I was quite young, and every square dance community has one club called Hoosier Partner. It's some kind of law from the court of the Right And Left Grand. They did meet some nice people, though they suspected that they were the only Democrats in the square dance club.

    John

    1. Doug Holland Avatar

      Is it really "Hoosier partner"?

They taught us square-dancing in school, a full week of it every dang year from 4th grade to 6th. I still wonder why, and wonder whether they still do, and if they still do, I still wonder why.

    2. johnthebasket Avatar

The Tacoma School District had some pretty bad elementary ed, and I learned most of what I learned about basic math, geography, spelling, science and lit at home, but even TSD weren't goofy enough to offer square dance lessons. Things got a little better in jr. high, but still managed to avoid square dancing. I understand elementary schools have improved a lot. They couldn't have gotten much worse.

      jtb

    3. Doug Holland Avatar

Really? The square dancing wasn't a nationwide requirement for all children? Never even occurred to me, but I guess a couple of square dance enthusiasts on a local school board makes more sense. I hate 'em, whoever they are, and dosey doe…

Although there is now a federal department of education, there are few federal standards concerning education. That's done at the state level. Of course, that model was created during the segregation era. Yup, the Jim Crow Education Model. My man Jack Kennedy helped desegregate the last of the State Universities and was fairly promptly shot. But yup, state and local school districts can buy crates of Trump bibles and install them in school libraries, if not classrooms. The Federal Department of Education largely employs teachers who can't teach so well. But nope, square dancing has never been mandated at the federal level. Maybe in Arkansas or Alabama, but my googler won't look up any segregation states, so I couldn't say for sure.

      John

    5. Doug Holland Avatar

If you ask me, and nobody does, eddikation is another YUGE problem that needs fed-level fixing. All schools should be federally funded, equally on a per student basis, and teaching the same standardized curriculum with the same classes, same textbooks, same tests, no variation except a few semesters of local and state history. The only things for the local School Board to decide would be what color to paint the school, and whether to start class at 8:00 or 8:30. And I'm not sure about the latter.

lord knows I'm not much of a contemporary country music fan, and this song's only about 25 years old (and I can't find a performance version of it), but I liked it the first time I heard it and I've liked it ever since. It was written and is performed by Jeff Talmadge from Austin down Texas way, from his album Gravity, Grace and the Moon. Here is "Beyond the Headlights".

Just a note on this album. . . I don't think Counselor Talmadge intended the title of his album to be a multiple choice question. He's just another Texas former attorney who is most popular in southern Texas and Europe. Go figure. I'm pretty sure I bought this album but lost it with many of my possessions in a divorce. I guess it wasn't one of those no-fault gizmos. The divorce, I mean, not the record, which doesn't seem to blame anyone.

I know you're not primarily a music guy, but Jeff Talmadge is quite a voice in the Texas hill country and also in The Netherlands, where several of his eight albums over the years have been radio favorites. By the way, I have a distant relative who just moved to Holland (as it is popularly called in English-speaking countries). Did you know that 90% of the people in Holland can converse in English? That beats the United States by several points. I'm not talking about our Hispanic or Native friends: just the Trump people. So my relative, who I'm not sure I've met: she's leaving home at 40 or so, bye bye. In case you're wondering, Sheila Bromberg, who played harp on "She's Leaving Home" died three years ago at 92. Paul produced her part, and co-produced the string orchestra which also appeared on the cut. Don't know where John, who wrote only the chorus of the song was, nor George nor George. I think Ringo was at home. 90 percent seems high.

You said the relative is distant so probably the answer is no, but do you know anything more about the move, and especially the why and how of it? When I looked into getting out of this shithole country, many many years ago, the fundamental requirement was gobs of money, and I have always been gobfree. Or, alternatively, one could travel across borders illegally, and spend the rest of one's life living off the books and under the table, which held minimal appeal. So inquiring minds want to know!

She's Leaving Home, and going much farther than I ever did.

Belated obit for Sheila Bromberg. Guess I wasn't doing obits yet in 2021, so I missed it.

I didn't have it down to the 90th digit, no, but I knew most Hollandaise speak English. Learned that also, many years ago, when I pondered emigration. Holland is where I wanted to go, a pretty cool country in myriad ways, at least on paper researching it at the library, so I'm somehow not surprised that Mr Talmadge is appreciated there.

Well that's either a long song or a short story by David Bromberg. Quite good by either measure. Yeah, I am not a music guy, so I rent my testes out to you and you rarely disappoint. Second one's not bad either.

She's actually going to school in Holland, so is on a student visa (I think they call it an extended student visa). She's started many things and never finished a one of them. So I suppose I'll find out from my Sis what happened to her. I suspect her of wanting to marry a local and become a low country wife. She already has a kiddo, so that's out of the way.

Holland does sound like a civilized country. It's certainly a country in which Trump couldn't get on a ballot. Adolph is too recent a memory.

I'm wrong about lots of musical stuff. That's how I learn more. As for that, much about any art is taste, which is fairly subjective. Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays had the same favorite singer: Bing Crosby. Perhaps because Mr Crosby was born in Tacoma. Perhaps not.
