Opium, marijuana, heroin, cocaine, LSD, PCP, meth, molly, speed, and fentanyl

Fun fact: Did you know San Francisco is the birthplace of illegal drugs in America? “In the United States, the first drug law was passed in San Francisco in 1875, banning the smoking of opium in opium dens,” says Wikipedia.

A century and a half later, drugs remain a serious problem. Surprise!Drugs will always be a serious problem, until we adopt the obvious solution that’s worked with alcohol and is working with marijuana in America’s saner states: End prohibition, and instead legalize, tax, and regulate drugs for safety. If America’s decrepit leadership had compassion and a sense of right and wrong, there’d also be free drug counseling and rehab, and safe use spaces, and drug education wouldn’t be riddled with lies, like this — from San Francisco again — via the news on TV:

On one day recently, CNN watched as task force members arrested a suspected drug dealer accused of selling meth and fentanyl. Inside a plastic bag: 33 grams of fentanyl that CHP officer Andy Barclay estimates, at its worst, could potentially kill thousands of people.

“We’re looking at around 16,500 fatal doses of pure fentanyl in that small bag. Yes, 16,500 people could potentially die,” Barclay said. Stick a microphone in a policeman’s face after any fentanyl bust, and they’ll claim they’ve prevented thousands of imaginary deaths. There was one report after a raid some months back where a cop said they’d prevented half a million deaths. It’s all bullshit, like the War on Drugs hysteria always is, but thanks for the laughs, Officer Andy.
Look, drugs are bad, m’kay? But humans have always enjoyed mind-altering substances, and they’re not going to stop. Could we ease the perpetual panic? After the opium panic and those first laws against drugs, there came the marijuana panic, and panics over heroin, and cocaine, and LSD, and PCP, and meth, and molly, and speed, and undoubtedly other drug panics that have slipped my mind this morning. Each panic comes with lies about the drug we’re panicked about, so even when the drugs are dangerous, you can’t seriously believe Officer Andy and all the other liars. After all, they’re the same folks who lied about the epidemic of
marihuana maniacs, and crack babies, and people on acid thinking they
could fly off of balconies. Each panic always requires mass arrests and imprisonments, with more and more lives ruined. And not hypothetical lives, like the ones saved from fentanyl on CNN, but actual lives of actual people. And not merely thousands, but millions, many millions — more than can accurately be counted. Here’s another fun fact: The people getting arrested and imprisoned for drugs usually aren’t white, and that’s not an ongoing eternal coincidence.Destroying black and brown people’s lives is why we have drug prohibition. This year’s panic, fentanyl, is a genuine problem. I’ve seen it, and so have you.But bringing in more police to arrest and imprison more dealers and more users is the problem, not the solution. The arrests and the panics and all the official lies are why we can’t have sensible conversations about the dangers of drugs, and sensible regulations, and actually help people who need help.Instead we go on destroying lives, for 150 years now. 9/4/2023

The Highway Patrol? I've only been to San Francisco a few times, is there a highway through the Tenderloin now?

    1. Doug Holland Avatar

You got me to Googling, and at the CHP website it says, "The California Highway Patrol was created in 1929 to provide uniform traffic law enforcement throughout the state. Assuring the safe, convenient and efficient transportation of people and goods on our highway system is still our primary purpose."

Highway 101 is nearby, but doesn't go through the Tenderloin.

Oh, Nicotine, Valium, Vicodin, marijuana, ecstasy and alcohol

    C-c-c-cocaine

    C-cocaine, oh
    C-c-c-cocaine, oh

That one's new to me, and kinda hurts my head. I had to google the lyrics, which I'll now share:

      Nicotine,
      Valium,
      Vicodin,
      marijuana,
      ecstasy
      and alcohol
      cocaine

Also googled and learned that ecstasy and molly are different forms of the same drug.

      Very educational!

    I PREDICT,
    IN THE NEAR FUTURE,

    RIGHT-WINGERS WILL USE
    DRUG HYSTERIA…

    AS A PRETEXT…

    TO SET UP AN INTERNATIONAL
    POLICE APPARATUS.

    BUT I'M AN OLD MAN,
    AND I MAY NOT LIVE…

    TO SEE A FINAL SOLUTION
    OF THE DRUG PROBLEM.

Wow. I saw that movie more than once and remembered that WB was in it, but I'd forgotten his frickin' luminescence.

Jeez, I wonder what the world would be like if we got over the insanity. Not even all the insanity, but just this one insanity, the drug insanity…

It's the same insanity that keeps us from having free (and simple) health care, free education, free housing, free food.

How come we can't get someone both sane and smart in charge?

Because they wouldn't be in charge. Obama was as close as it gets, and if you read about what his staff was trying to dance through congress versus what they actually got through congress, you'd cry. He was bright, a former serious weed smoker, he was funny, he liked the kind of music I'm in love with, and he had a smart wife. Sorry, that isn't enough. Systematic change ended segregation. Sure, Harry Truman, a southerner helped after Frank Roosevelt, a New Yorker wouldn't even meet with Jesse Owens, but a hundred brave preachers in a hundred black churches in the American South went on strike and grabbed the south by the balls.

Goddamn it, I hate being interrupted.

Yeah, that's the right answer, fer sher.

And nobody's got a grip on South's balls any more.

Well, Trump sorta does, especially when he's hosting infomercials for his mug shot. What moderately sane person wants a photo of Trump in their living room and especially that photo. These people have melted their brains with hatred and I begin to suspect they don't like Black people very much.

You might be on to something there. I don't think the Trump type like anyone much, even their spouses and children.

Time to take a shower and a poop and brush my teeth, but someone's in the john with Abraham and Martin.

I tried, man, really tried. Watched it three times. It's probably funny as heck, but I can't get past Leo.

He stands in the doorway, blocks up the hall, the most annoying actor since Steven Seagal.

Jeez, he's SO immeasurably, infinitely awful I was laughing by about three minutes into that video, but in fairness the dialogue he's blithely spouting is so bad I don't think Laurence Olivier could've sold it.

Jiminy crispers, what is wrong with me? It looks like I STILL haven't rewatched and reviewed A Scanner Darkly. I don't remember even whether I liked it the first time 'round, but every time I see a clip I am re-blown away. Might be Winona Ryder's best performance.

      It's downloading now, damn it.

Final scene, it says, so I skipped it, but Scanner is going to cut into line for a soon viewing.
