A security issue with Zoom

When my brother asked me to download and install Zoom, the app’s security lapses were already in the headlines, so I can’t plead ignorance. But what the hell, I’m a thousand miles away and I wanted to see my siblings and nieces and nephews in a Brady Bunch format, so I installed Zoom on my laptop.

I’ll skip writing a review about the ordinary technical glitches, and how half of every conversation seems to be everyone saying “I can’t see you” and “Mark dropped off,” and how the sound was so unreliable that I often used the “chat” function to type comments instead of actually speaking. All that’s
beside the point.

What you need to know is that I don’t like to be on camera. My apartment is a mess, I’m a mess, and I’m usually sitting here in my underwear, or less. I’m an introvert, so I simply never invite anyone into my home, and inviting a camera into my home falls under
the same rule, so — nope.

That’s why I installed Zoom on a computer that
doesn’t have a camera, leaving no possibility that anyone could see anything I don’t want them to see. Or so I thought.

Before we Zoomed, I found an amusing picture online, of a man even older and uglier than me, and added that as my Zoom profile picture. When the family got connected, I could see and hear everyone, and they could hear me, but they could only see that photo of a man who isn’t me.

Everything went fine except for the ordinary glitches that plague every Zoom meeting. We Zoomed again and again, with no unexpected problems.

Our fourth family Zoom was earlier tonight. We were all chatting as usual, and again I was represented visually by that old toothless man. Both my brothers were on the call, with my mother, my sister, an old family friend, a nephew and a couple of my nieces. Everything was all yakity kay, and as usual, and then —

Without warning, without me touching anything, the on-screen photo of the old guy flickered away, and in its place appeared this silly “success” meme. →

My sister and nephew read the meme out loud, wondering what it meant and what had happened to the picture of the old man. My Mom said, “Well, that doesn’t look ‘successful’ to me.”

The photo and the meme are both on my laptop, but they’re not even in the same folder. I had never uploaded the meme to Zoom — Zoom helped itself to that image, and shared in instantly with my family.

And I was thinking of all the other JPGs on my computer that Zoom might’ve randomly shared with
my family — including my sizable library of pornography. After several seconds in shock, I closed out of Zoom, leaving the conversation without another word.

Can’t see any way that what happened could’ve been caused by me or by my laptop, so very obviously, it’s a problem with Zoom’s software. I’m not reporting it to Zoom, because fuck Zoom, but I’ve written it up here, as a warning to others.

I’ve sent the family a quick email announcing my resignation from Zoom, uninstalled the app, and will never Zoom again.

My Sis does an N-way Zoom call with about 6-7 locations of my BiL’s family. None of them possesses any nuclear secrets except for nuclear family secrets, and being homo instead of hetero isn’t that big a deal anymore. Should they be worried?

I do a monthly 2-way call with my Doc. The feds are really cracking down on pain meds and all sorts of meds that I get for my heart, so my Doc needs to see me, at least over a link. The call substitutes for a drive over the beautiful and expensive Narrows Bridge and saves me a fair amount of money each year. Should I be worried? I mean about Zoom, not my heart.

Whether to worry is up to you. I’m just reportin’ the facts. I’ve never heard of what happened with me happening with anyone else, if that puts your worries to bed, but I’m still never using Zoom again.

You’re joking, right? If you’ve read any of Trump’s actions and proposals shared on Doug Holland’s blog, you’d know that’s not true at all, Mr. Thebasket.

I’m not trying to minimize the damage Trump could do — but, to reiterate, my gay and lesbian friends and family haven’t lost jobs or been harassed yet, and nobody expects to be. There are concerns for gay and lesbian folks under 18 who are still in public school, and I feel for them. I don’t know anyone who is transgender, which is why I contained my observation to homosexuality. And no, I don’t joke about human rights.

You’re an old straight white man of the left-wing persuasion, and so am I. Being retired, we’re no longer forced to mingle daily with the haters, which is terrific but leaves us in a mighty blue bubble, but let me pop it.

Even here in liberal Washington, Trump & Vance got 39% of the vote. Being LGBTQ+ still gets people punished or killed in a lot of places, and it happens here. Everyone LGBTQ+ everywhere is aware of it, like women walking alone after dark.

I don’t like it when people who are on the same side quibble about degrees of prejudice. I came from the 50s, and had a couple of shirttail relatives who were gay, although it wasn’t called that then. Gay and lesbian people in the 50s were mostly closeted, with the exceptions of a few progressive cities — and even there, queer jokes were socially acceptable. If you were gay or lesbian, your chances of getting a decent job were substantially reduced and your chances of being assaulted were nontrivial. Nobody seems to read history these days, so your average commenter seems to think gay/lesbian people were always respected for who they were. They weren’t. We’ve made a lot of progress, and Trump will set some of that progress back, but won’t be able to push back against history. There’s nothing as powerful as an idea whose time has come.

You are so much more optimistic than me.

I DO want to make clear that my comments above related to gay and lesbian people. Trans folks are threatened because “there are only two genders.” It’s a specious argument that has nothing to do with trans people, but that doesn’t stop the asshole from using it. He not only doesn’t know what a trans person is, he doesn’t know what an argument is.

In any case, anyone who feels threatened has my support and sympathy. Threatening people from a position of power has always been chickenshit, and it’s chickenshit today.

It’s always, always harder for the folks society sneers at, than the non-sneered can comprehend. My sympathies are always with the sneered.
