A shriek at the darkness

Instead of following last night’s election returns, I disconnected from the internet, watched a good movie, and read several more chapters in a book I’m liking a lot.

Woke to news that wasn’t what I’d hoped. It wasn’t even close, and we can’t blame the Electoral College, since Trump won by 5,000,000 votes. The American people have spoken.

What they’ve said is “Fuck you, America,” and specifically, fuck climate change, fuck women’s rights, fuck minority rights, fuck gay or trans or kink rights, fuck everyone who’s not white and straight and Christian, and of course they’re saying “Fuck you” to you and me specifically. And verily, we are fucked.

Climate change is the world’s biggest problem, and already next to nothing was being done to address it, but with Trump in charge, America will (again) withdraw from the minimal accords, re-embrace coal, push against renewables, and do everything that can be done to rush into our worst possible future.

Project 2025 will become what it was intended: a blueprint for undoing anything that’s improved America in the past century.

Trump/Vance will push for banning abortion nationwide. And realistically, what stands in their way?

Gay marriage and gay rights are certainly at peril, possibly with an exception for gay Republicans.

Robert Kennedy Jr goes from being a wingnut punchline to being in charge of America’s health.

Gaza and Ukraine, adios.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) will be outlawed.

The only immigration will be illegal immigration.

If Trump is still alive come 2028, his Supreme Court will rule that the 22nd Amendment only applies to consecutive terms, and he’ll be President for Life.

Among more mundane matters, the already-negligible regulation of huge corporations will be slashed, the looming merger of Albertson’s and Kroger will be approved, and anti-trust action against Google will be scuttled. On and on.

For all this pessimism, though — and my supply is now limitless — I’m trying to remain stoic, sardonic. This is our punishment for being well-informed voters — we get to shiver in terror at what’s coming soon, while Trump’s base of the minimally-informed won’t know what went wrong, even after it’s all gone wrong.

Yup, we’re fucked. Like 2016-2020 only moreso, every day will be a new assault on human decency. But now, Trump’s gotten meaner and insaner, and has a meaner, insaner sidekick in JD Vance.

Pick a problem, any problem facing America or the world, and it’s about to get worse. But the people have spoken, and worse is what America wants, so my best advice is: If you’re not rich white & straight, hurry up and get rich white & straight, or face the consequences.

That was a thumping that even I didn’t expect. I was pessimistic but heading into the election itself I thought, well, her campaign has been garbage, but if you can outright buy this thing she has raised enough money to buy this thing.

They never visited rural Georgia, just sent Bill Clinton to explain that HIS billionaire friends are better than Trump’s billionaire friends. Then they sent him to the Detroit suburbs to tell Arabs that their family members weren’t in Israel first so the country really has no choice but to kill them and we are proud to send them the nooses and blindfolds. The candidate could have cleaned that up except she was taking the full day off 2 weeks before the election to prepare for a friendly 20 minute interview on NBC where she was typically evasive but inexplicably hostile for no reason.

But they should be able to buy this thing. I guess the good news is that you… can’t? And if you field a scolding candidate that nobody knows and those that do don’t have a great feeling about her and then lock her in a room because you’re afraid she’ll be asked questions about what she’ll do and then campaign with war criminals, you might still lose despite throwing $400 million at Pennsylvania.

This isn’t a bad as Nixon or Reagan’s re-election (was only alive for one of those but I can read a map), but you’re right, the curse of knowing a bit about anything is understanding a little more of what’s coming: charlatans and crooks like Kennedy and Musk and Tucker, an official Trump Thanksgiving NFT, crypto investors with bodies buried in their backyard carving out FTC policy, unions sent back to the basement to write stern memos about firings they can’t do anything about and all of them getting high off another injection of cheap money. Can’t wait to find out all the new ways they intend to financialize my life and sell interest on my likelihood of dying in short order.

You were following the campaign closer than I did. Can’t really speak to her strategy, except that everything you say sure sounds right to me. The Democrats again are the alleged opposition, the Washington Generals to the Republicans’ Harlem Globetrotters.

For me the entire campaign was like TV news — it puts me in a sour mood just watching the briefest snippets of that horse doodoo, so I didn’t. Reading about it in bits, though, Harris’s strategy seemed to be basically blather, always in a dash to back away from saying anything inspiring, never speaking to people’s genuine and obvious and widespread problems. No solutions from what’s amusingly called “the left.”

To me, she didn’t seem any different from Biden in 2020 or Clinton in 2016. Going through the motions. “Same old same old” was enough for Biden last time, probably because he had a penis and name familiarity and whiteness. It wasn’t enough for a relative newbie who lacked all three.

The Dems, of course, will never nominate anyone who isn’t “same old same old.” If further elections are allowed, they’ll all look like reruns of 2024.

I edited it out of my rant because it’s a little off-topic, but what struck me first was the margin. Trump lost by 7-million four years ago, and won by 5-million yesterday — that’s a 12-million vote turnaround, even though he was *much* more obviously crazy this time around. He almost literally promised to stomp America like Godzilla, and America said, “Sounds good. Start stomping. It’s better than same old same old.”

Yeah, it’s going to be ugly as fuck.

I never dreamed a Republican could win the majority vote again, they’ve only done it once since I’ve been able to vote and that was during war hysteria.

My first thought was election fraud, because despite Trump saying it, those electronic counting machines really are a black hole of trust. But unless there’s some evidence, and I’ve seen none, it’s absurd to imagine anyone connected with Trump has enough competence to pull off such a scheme.

I’m old enough to have been fucked in the ass by Nixon, Reagan and Bush I — That was a long 24 years with only four years of Jimmy Carter in the middle to catch a breath. But I do prefer breathing, and the plebiscite numbers yesterday were rather breathtaking.

When the Beatles sang “I Wanna Hold Your Hand”, the top US marginal tax rate was 91%. It is now 37%, with a LOT more exemptions. Every decrease has been during a Republican administration, and our educational system doesn’t arm the poor (all of us, for example) with information as to how to vote in their best interests. Of course, Harris got a late start: Obama was organizing a Presidential run four full years before he ran. Harris woke up with no time to organize at all. Whatever her national message, the Dems could have used some local organization in the swings (phone banks, rides to polling places, buddy systems, doorbelling, etc.) that seemed to be barely present, especially in Pennsylvania and Georgia. Michigan was the biggest surprise to me. The decline of unionism in the US has had a horrible effect on the Democrats’ ability to win blue collar states.

It was a horrible day for everyone except the rich, and a horrible day for America.

91%, as late as the early 1960s. Breathtaking.

I barely remember Nixon, but thought he was the worst American president… until Reagan, who was the worst American president… until Bush, who was the worst… until Bush, who was the worst imaginable… until Trump… And when Trump chokes on a french fry, it’ll be JD Vance.

I don’t know how rich he is, but I don’t think Tuesday was a bad day for DNC Chair Jaime Harrison. He’s quitting, sure, but there’ll be a comfortable place for him in Democratic circles, and for his successor, who’ll try just as hard (not very), and fail just as predictably.

There’s no hope to be had from the Democratic Party, and no other alternative is allowed, so there’s no hope to be had.

Gone is a genocidal president too hypocritical to admit it. And in comes a genocidal president who wears it as a badge of honor.
