“Uptick in abductions”: ICE ramps up targeting of Minneapolis legal observers

Hard hats and dummy plates: Reports of ICE ruses add to fears in Minnesota

Excerpt: For days, Luis Ramirez had an uneasy feeling about the men dressed as utility workers he’d seen outside his family’s Mexican restaurant in suburban Minneapolis.

They wore high-visibility vests and spotless white hard hats, he noticed, even while parked in their vehicle. His search for the Wisconsin-based electrician advertised on the car’s doors returned no results.

On Tuesday, when their Nissan returned to the lot outside his restaurant, Ramirez, 31, filmed his confrontation with the two men, who hide their faces as he approaches and appear to be wearing heavy tactical gear beneath their yellow vests.

“This is what our taxpayer money goes to: renting these vehicles with fake tags to come sit here and watch my business,” Ramirez shouts in the video.

A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement did not respond to inquiries about whether the men were federal immigration officers. But encounters like Ramirez’s have become increasingly common…

ICE List: the small European website exposing US immigration agents

Excerpt: The roots of the website trace back to June, when Kristi Noem, the US homeland security secretary, warned that Americans who identified ICE agents publicly would face arrest. “I reposted that and said, ‘well, we’re not in the US, so send them to us,’” said Skinner, 31. “By the evening I had private investigators messaging me, and by the next week we had a framework of how to work.”

The site currently operates as a sort of crowdsourced wiki, drawing on a pool of about 500 volunteers to comb through tips from the public. As tensions swirl over ICE’s presence on US streets, another 300 people have expressed interest in volunteering, he says.

News always and only from reliable sources, and I decide what’s reliable — no right-wing bullshit, no Substack because fuck Nazis, and no RawStory, Newsweek, or other clickbait sites. Written news is preferred; video links will be rare, and never to videos where a camera is pointed at a reporter or podcaster — that’s show biz, not news. When necessary, links lead to secondary sites that strip away paywalls, aggressive ads, or the original site’s dumbass design.

    Unbelievable story:

    https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/americans-sell-plasma-inflation-middle-class-expenses-economy-rcna258390

I think I just got “radicalized” by NBC News, wtf man

    1. Doug Holland Avatar

More people should be more radicalized. Middle class, schmiddle class, everyone who ain’t rich is little people. Most refuse to admit it, but if you’re selling plasma it’s like a name tag saying you’re little people.

I’m big fat little people. The article actually got me looking into it.

Good luck with the broken veins and the machines that can’t regulate the pump flow. Only hardcore down-and-outers have the patience to put up with this shit more than a couple times. If you need 65 bucks that bad, you are better off finding a rich old homo and letting him blow you.

    1. Doug Holland Avatar

You’ve been there, done that? Share the inside info, please!

Last time I seriously looked into it was in Wisconsin, and there was red tape that made it too much a hassle. Looking at it now, here in Seattle, all they seem to want is normal medical info. But $65 isn’t enough, for a couple of hours of discomfort.

If I ever put up an anti-plasma billboard, I now know what it will say:

“If you need 65 bucks that bad, you are better off finding a rich old homo and letting him blow you.”

      Thanks Henry!

        You’re welcome!

It’s not worth the hassle, unless you are absolutely flat broke. At least based on the two plasma donation centers near me. The machines never pump right, and when that happens it vibrates, and it feels like the needle is about to puncture your vein. Maybe they got better equipment at some places. The ones around here are pretty scuzzy. Or used to be. I went twice two years ago when I was hard up.

I have a friend who is dating a much younger guy, he drives for uber and is broke all the time and he donates plasma. Supposedly it knocks him out all day and the experience is incredibly depressing. I’m guessing most of these places are as fucked up as your experience, there is a ruthlessness at play whenever it comes to extracting anything from the poor.

            > … there is a ruthlessness at play whenever it comes to extracting anything from the poor.

That’s so true I might make it into a meme.

I can’t remember what it’s from, or even whether it was a book or a movie, but there’s a scene from some science fiction that’s stayed with me for years…

Outside, urban, a few homeless people are talking about their hunger and their shitty lives, but mostly about their hunger. Along comes a truck that parks nearby, and a nice, smiley looking guy gets out and says dinner is inside. Nice grub, he says, and lists a few items on the menu, and lowers a ramp to the back of the truck, and people start walking up the ramp…

            > … there is a ruthlessness at play whenever it comes to extracting anything from the poor.

              granville

I vaguely remember one of the David Tennant Dr. Who seasons where the homeless are turned into Cybermen in that kind of a way? I’ve only seen it once though and my imagination might be filling in a lot of the blanks.

I remember going through a bankruptcy case of a family member of a friend, and seeing at how persistent companies were at hounding a person on a fixed income, and how they try to scare them to get them to skip paying their rent or some other bill at the beginning of every month made my friend stop and say “I never realized how lucrative it was to extract money from the poor.”

              1. Doug Holland Avatar

In the before times, it was constant calls from collection agents well trained to never actually listen and forbidden to actually hear. They’d just say “You must pay,” over and over and in different ways. As if the poor schmoe they’re calling had decided not to pay. Fucks.

Now, I assume the collection calls come from AI fucks instead of human fucks, so there’s not even a conscience that needs to be subdued.

And yeah, you nailed it — an episode of Doctor Who.

        2. Doug Holland Avatar

Jezus. I don’t mind & sometimes even enjoy quaint, rickety old machinery if it still does the job. But not quaint, rickety old machinery hooked up to my body.
