Let there be pain

If you’re paying close attention or keeping score at home, you might remember that Doug has a toothache. For nearly a month now, pain levels have gone up and down like a rollercoaster, and a few times the down-levels have been so slight and long-lasting that I thought I’d won, but then the up-levels scold me for such foolish thinking.

Lately the pain has extended far beyond the original tooth, leaving my entire lower jaw numb and painful (conundrum alert!). The jaw is swollen, leaving all my bottom teeth very tightly jammed against each other, and it wouldn’t surprise me if one of them cracked under the pressure.

Searching for cheap dentists has scored me two appointments for Tuesday, August 12, though it’s hard to imagine I’d survive until then.

Searching for emergency dentists got me a stand-by appointment on Wednesday, August 6, but ‘standby’ means I go in and wait in their office and hope someone cancels a real appointment, in which case I get dental care.

Searching for DENTIST NOW led me toward a more expensive hammer-and-chisel guy, who’ll see me tomorrow if I bring cash in unmarked bills. If we make the deal and he yanks the tooth, I’ll cancel the other appointments.

The place seems sorta shady, so I’m hoping they’ll skip the big sales pitch dentists always give. Always, despite me pointing at the problem tooth, every dentist wants to cure my entire mouth, which is of course a pit of rot & decay. The big pitch is always, “We can give you a Tom Cruise smile, for only $110,000 (or some such outlandish number) and 28 bi-weekly visits over the next year.”

Of course, I don’t have $110,000, and if I did I’d spend it on pizza deliveries and making a porn-movie masterpiece. Got zero interest in being a fat Tom Cruise. All I want is the ability to think about something, anything, without also thinking about the pain.

It’s Saturday morning, and the bus to the dentist comes in 12 minutes, so I’ve dashed off this brief worryfest, much more as a “diary entry” than as something worth reading, but here goes…

The pain rolls in and out like the tides, but less predictably. For the first few weeks there was some correlation between chewing, and what I’d chewed, and the subsequent pain — tough meat = more pain, soup = less pain. That’s no longer the case; the pain decides for itself, and it no longer matters what I’ve eaten, whether I’ve eaten, or how many Tylenol, ibuprofen, and aspirin are swirling in my veins.

Dentists have a different definition of ’emergency’ than un-dental-educated folks. An ‘immediate care’ dentist couldn’t see me for 12 days. The university’s ’emergency’ dental services couldn’t see me for five days. A private practice that actually has ‘Same Day’ in its name gave me an appointment for day after tomorrow, which is now this morning, thank Cripes.

It’s $150 just to have the guy look at my mouth, and then presumably hundreds more to get the tooth yanked. I’ll be pleasantly surprised if the total is less than $750, but it’ll be worth that and more, to have my life back, and my face back. Everything from ear to ear is numb and tingles to the touch.

Which leads to my biggest worry. It’s not the pain, not the money. My worry is that the dentist will say they can’t yank the tooth, because my whole face, jaw, head is racked with infection. They’ll say I gotta see a doctor first, not a dentist, and take a 28-day regimen of antibiotics, so — come back in a month. But another month of living the pain I’ve been living would be death.

I hope everything worked out good at the dentist.

I’m too shellshocked to write about it, but the dentist was *exponentially* more painful than the toothache. Probably saved my life, though.

The time is right for a double feature: Marathon Man and Little Shop Of Horrors

Maybe after the next round of tooth-pullings.

“Probably saved my life, though.”  Does that mean you’re not sure you are still alive?  Or not sure your continued life is due to the dentist?  In any event, you would want your roommate to outlive you.  Glad you are still here.

If Doug dies I’ll just subscribe to his roommate’s blog

Dean is my only flatmate who’s literate enough to conceivably write, but he’d write about butter.

I don’t even know what it means. Dentist never said “It could kill ya,” but I got that impression. They said three times that the infection was “wow,” and wanted four teeth but I only yielded one. More to go soon.

Doug, I’m remarkably broke, but I could kick in a few bucks toward the Doug Fund. I should know this, but I don’t or have forgotten. Do you have a Post Office Box Number? Or an address where I can send a few bucks in cash? I feel for you, mi amigo. I’ve derived pleasure from your writing and I owe more than I can pay.

Well, ain’t you sweeter than cotton candy.

Saturday’s extraction was the most expensive single item I’ve purchased since my wife’s cremation, a bit more than $800 to have one tooth pulled. They wanted to pull four, for several grand which would’ve left me penniless, but even in my novocain and pain-induced shivers, cheapness is my nature.

Pulling one tooth was en emergency, and this was the only dentist who’d do it without a week’s wait. $802 eliminated most of the mouth pain, and left me swallowing antibiotics for the infection(s), so the situation is under control. In a week I’ll sit in a different dentist’s charity chair, where the next three extractions might cost as little as $480 total. That’s so affordable I might offer a $100 tip.

Cordially but thankfully, your offer of kindness is appreciated but declined. I’m an American so lack of insurance is going to kill me, but probably not this or next week.

How soon before we see reviews of baby food brands instead of Seattle diners?

The standard American mouth has 32 teeth, and I’ve had 9-10 yanked, with three now pending. Still means I got more teeth than gaping holes in between.
