News you need,
but might’ve missed

Hegseth told US soldiers in Iraq to ignore legal advice on rules of engagement

It’s strange, what the media or perhaps the public chooses to get all excited about. This week, it’s Hegseth issuing a “take no prisoners” order, which was followed by killing two survivors in one of the US military attacks on boaters in the Caribbean.

Sure, killing the survivors is illegal, but so’s attacking the boats in the first place, so’s the killing of 80+ people in the boats sunk so far by the US military. Why is this particular outrage deemed “outrageous”?

Reminds me of 2021, when Trump rallied his supporters to riot at the capitol. Suddenly everyone was infuriated, though Trump had committed a thousand impeachable acts before that day. By now he’s up to 10,000+, and this particular crime — killing those two survivors of an illegal attack — probably isn’t in the top 100, but it’s what’s pissing people off.

And also, from the same article …

Excerpt: But some US senators have raised the possibility that the US war secretary committed a war crime.

Me again: This is a minor quibble, but whatever the hell he calls himself, Hegseth is not the Secretary of War.

Hegseth brags about war crimes, and headline at ABC News makes it sound boring

Their BS headline: “Hegseth responds to report that boat survivors were killed as a result of his orders to military”

Excerpt: “Our current operations in the Caribbean are lawful under both U.S. and international law, with all actions in compliance with the law of armed conflict — and approved by the best military and civilian lawyers, up and down the chain of command,” Hegseth said.

[scroll way down] … Critics of the Trump administration and some legal experts have questioned the legality of the strikes. Under the Geneva Conventions, wounded or sick combatants are to be collected and cared for by either side in a conflict.

Entire chain of command could be held liable for killing boat strike survivors, sources say

Yeah, and monkeys wearing tuxedos might emerge from Scarlett Johansson’s butt, but it’s unlikely.

Trump confirms conversation with Venezuela’s Maduro

Excerpt: US President Donald Trump confirmed on Sunday that he had [blah blah blah]…

Me again: No, absolutely no. It’s ludicrous for a professional journalist to claim that something, anything, could be “confirmed” on the basis of Donald Trump’s say-so. Dude lies every time he says anything more than “My name is Donald Trump.” How fuckin’ gullible can you be, Reuters?

World Socialist Web Site to launch Socialism AI

Excerpt: I am pleased to announce today that the International Committee has taken measures to harness the power of AI for the purposes and interests of the working class movement. Within a few weeks, we will be releasing Socialism AI, a revolutionary application of augmented intelligence to the development of socialist consciousness and the organizational capacity of the international working class.

Me again: Like any socialists who always talk about socialism, the World Socialist Web Site has no sense of humor, so sadly, this announcement isn’t a joke.

Gutting of key US watchdog could pave way for grave immigration abuses, experts warn

Not ‘could’, will. These fuckers love cruelty and hate immigration, and none of the looming “grave immigration abuses” will be accidental, or bother Republicans at all.

Trump pardons Honduran cocaine kingpin

Excerpt: Former Honduras President Juan Orlando Hernández, sentenced last year to 45 years in prison for his role in a drug trafficking operation that moved hundreds of tons of cocaine to the United States, was released from prison following a pardon from President Donald Trump, officials confirmed Tuesday.

Zillow removes climate risk scores from home listings

Zillow tried to estimate the climate risk underlying real estate investments, and it worked — it made selling climate-doomed properties a little less lucrative and profitable. The real estate industry hated that, and literally owns Zillow, so now that information is gone.

News always and only from reliable sites, and I decide what’s reliable — no right-wing bullshit, no Substack because fuck Nazis, and no RawStory, Newsweek, or other clickbait sources. Written news is preferred; video links will be rare, and never to videos that show a reporter or podcaster talking to a camera — that’s show biz, not news. When necessary, links lead to secondary sites that strip away paywalls, aggressive ads, or the original site’s dumbass design.

I am shocked at your heartlessness. Whatever happened to SUPPORT THE TROOPS? The US Navy’s Gerald R. Ford carrier strike group was gravely endangered, threatened with extermination by two wounded men clinging to wreckage in the middle of the ocean. Everything could have gone wrong if not for the carrier strike group’s courage and superior firepower, satellite reconnaissance and general lack of ethics.

Glad nobody much says “Support the troops” any more. Always hated that line. It’s as glum and brainless as “Support the police.” They’re hired, they’re paid, that’s “support” enough. I don’t do cheerleader service, and if I did it would be for nurses and garbage truck drivers, people doing work that actually benefits someone other than themselves.

Fuck the troops. There hasn’t been a draft since the early 1970s.

Trump and Hegseth and their minions are just randomly lobbing missiles and death at people boating the Caribbean. DRUGS they say but with no evidence and no authority, this is international waters. Media chooses to make the double-tap the news and ignore that the whole attacks, all of them are cold-blooded murder, completely illegal.

This is what grinds me. How can anyone sane have an honest conversation about whether a Geneva rule was violated in the midst of mass murder?
