Hmmm. What other healthcare-related items aren't "deeply-rooted" in American history? Birth control, for one. In vitro fertilization, for another. Radiation oncology? Liver transplants? It's quite a long list of medical procedures to be disallowed, one after another.
Twitter goes offline in Brazil after Elon Musk's refusal to comply with that nation's laws#450 [archive] SEPT. 2, 2024 |
Quick recap: Twitter has been used to fan right-wing lunacy and violence, in Brazil and elsewhere, but in Brazil they're pissed off about it and demanding something be done.
Big-mouth Twitter owner Elon Musk plays the victim and ignores court orders, but a Brazilian judge says Musk and Twitter are not above the law — what a concept!
There's money involved and money almost always wins, but for today, Twitter is off the air in the internet's fifth-largest market, and it's beautiful.
The COVID vaccine just got a lot more expensive, if you're uninsured
A booster costs $200, eh? I'll probably take my chances and skip any more shots.
Excerpt: Sarah Phelps, a Sonoma County Regional Parks marketing specialist, said, "We're a little disappointed that we weren't contacted before this project started." The department has reached out to Butterfly — through advocates for homeless people — to ask that work on the project be suspended while officials decide what to do, Phelps said. "I don't think we have a clear solution at this point," Phelps said. "We know this is an important issue, but it was not approved by us before it started."
I'll wager the cost of a COVID booster that the bureaucrats will decide the rocks must be 'cleaned', the memorials disallowed, to preserve the scenic view of the rocks.

Republicans doing whatever dirty dealing the worst of them suggests? No surprise in that. But Democrats willing to fight back? That would be a beautiful change of pace.

I've only ridden the Empire Builder twice (one round trip), and I had to hurry back to work so there wasn't time enough for leisure like this. Now that I'm retired, maybe there's time...
I've said this before and better, but I plopped it somewhere else on the internet a few days ago, so I might as well share it here at home:
It depresses the hell out of me that 43% of America thinks Donald Trump is the best choice. Says a lot about education and mental illness in the USA.
It's also depressing that 46% of America thinks Kamala Harris is the best choice. She is, but she's the status quo, offers no solutions to any of the real problems, and doesn't even acknowledge the real problems. She'll keep us sailing steady toward the icebergs.
Trump is iceberg-bound as well, but he'd drill holes in the hull on the way. That's the difference between them, and the reason I'm hoping for Harris.
So by golly, vote for Harris and steady sailing toward the iceberg, not Trump and the scuttling of the ship. It's important!

"It's also depressing that 46% of America thinks Kamala Harris is the best choice."
ReplyDeleteThe people telling us that Kamala Harris is the best choice are the same people who, six weeks ago, were telling us that Joe Biden was perfectly fit to lead. And they're the same people who were wetting their pants with delight about Hillary Clinton's imminent coronation on the eve of the last election. In other words, people who are corrupt, clueless, and self-serving.
And yet I get pushback when I suggest that the media - left/right/center - has done more damage to this nation than any other institution.
No pushback from me. Eight years later, the press is still treating Trump as if he's an ordinary candidate, never mentioning that his speeches are 88% nonsense and 12% bullshit. And 99% of the news that matters never makes the news.
DeleteBrazilian here! Brazil didn’t Ban twitter. Here’s what happened:
ReplyDeleteBrazilian justice subpoena’d Twitter as a company for the information of 7 accounts of people who are under investigation for being involved with the unconstitutional riot of January 7, 2022, led by far right figures who refused to accept the election results after known military criminal Jair Bolsonaro was not reelected. Rather than comply, Elon decided to close Twitter offices in Brazil, as he believes the due process is an infrigement on freedom of speech, for some reason. Because it is illegal under Brazilian law for any business to operate in Brazil without a local legal representative, the Supreme Court demanded the company appoint one in order to continue operating in Brazilian territory. Elon refused. Therefore, as per Brazilian Law, Twitter is no longer permitted to operate in national territory. This can be reversed once Twitter appoints a legal representative of Twitter in Brazil.
This is not a political act of censorship onto Brazilian people. It is a consequence of Elon Musk’s failure to comply with Brazilian Law. In short: Brazil didn’t ban Twitter, Twitter left Brazil.
The rules are never for wealthy people. Even now, with the fine paid by seizing the funds from other Musky businesses, it's still nothing. If an ordinary human without billions of dollars did a small-scale version of the same thing, they'd be in jail.
DeleteAlso, unrelated but I have to ask: Are you or Brazilians in general offended when Americans use the term 'Brazilian' to refer to a pubic haircut?
