Markwayne Mullin replacing Kristi Noem at DHS is going to be awful in his own way. He is a big bumbler whenever he speaks, he once challenged a witness to a fistfight during a Senate hearing, he just can’t stop confusing Iran and Iraq, etc. And now he’s going to be responible for mile-high boning Corey Lewandowski?

He’s a step down in competence, but that’s a good thing, and there’ll be no change in cruelty, corruption, and absence of decency. Lewandowski won’t notice any difference.

He’s a step down, but skillful in his deployment of a step stool. Hopefully he does as many photo-ops as Kreepy Kristi because this “tough guy” is actually about 5’6″ tall.

Height is never the measure of a man, well, except literally, but the Noem posing became kinda funny after a while. Please, let’s make posing in ridiculous costumes part of the job description!

Have you seen or reviewed “The Last of Us”?
I thought it was garbage, but as is often the case, your review would be of interest.

I’ve heard little about it. Wikipedia says it’s based on a video game, which is not a plus for me since I don’t do video games, so unless you tell me it’s rotten in a fun way, I’ll probably just endorse your assessment that it’s garbage.

Heck, just watch season 1 episode 3, which has virtually nothing to do with the rest of the show, and got a lot of attention. I don’t know!

As a little movie of its own, that was not bad at all. Now I’m tempted to look at the whole dang show, but it’s basically just zombies again, so I dunno. Zombies don’t do it for me unless there’s something imaginative, and I don’t know that fungus qualifies.

Yeah, fuck zombies. The best parts of the show are the relationships between the characters, and as it progresses the zombies take a back seat and it becomes more about how to rebuild society – the differences between ideologies, political systems, etc.
Reading up on it, it seems to follow the video game almost beat for beat… I haven’t played a video game since, I dunno, 1986? But I don’t understand how you “play” these modern games that are so narrative heavy. What is there for you, the player, to do? I couldn’t even understand Dungeons & Dragons 40 years ago.

Yeah, I don’t get it either. Literature, and perhaps all art and entertainment, comes down to storytelling. Tell me a story. Daniel Defoe wrote Robinson Crusoe, beginning to end.
Video games tell different stories depending on how you interact with them, but I don’t have any interest in Robinson Crusoe with every chapter wide open and varying depending on what choices I made in the previous chapter.

Things I ought to and hope to write about:
Mom had heart surgery, and it went well physically, but her head hasn’t handled it right. She was talking and Mom and all afterwards, but over the course of the next day and now the day after, she’s very much on the fritz. Doesn’t know her name or where she is or any of her kids. She’s had a lot of years of good health and a good life, and we’re hoping she has a few more, but at the moment there’s no knowing.
My nephew George is meeting me for breakfast later this morning, and I wish he wasn’t. He’s long made it clear he’s a wacko, but his wife’s divorcing him and he’s been extra wacko the past few times I’ve seen him, and not in a fun way. Yesterday he was talking 85 decibels about his lack of sex life in Mom’s hospital room while med techs were working on her.
My own health is not what it was. The daily walks that used to leave me invigorated, now just leave me achy. I’m still enjoying reruns of Doctor Who, though, and really, what else is there?

Anesthesia, even administered properly, is the most dangerous part of any surgery. As I understand it, the older the patient is, the more likely and severe (and unpredictable) the complications. My dad had heart surgery and the same thing happened: Physically fine, but within months dementia and other conditions arose. He didn’t last long after that.
Did they put you fully under for your embolism? I’ve only had general once, for a heart procedure. Half dozen other times I had lesser variants for colonoscopies, dental work, cheap thrills, etc. Honestly the latter were much harder to recover from than the general anesthesia for some reason.

My mom’s beginning to recognize people, and now knows she’s in a hospital. She thinks it’s the hospital where her kids were born, but it’s not. We’re optimistic, though.
For my lung surgery a coupla months ago, they gave only enough anesthesia to numb the pain, but I was awake and talking all through the procedure. For my mom’s surgery, they took her all the way under, presumably because a twitch or an itch could do damage during heart surgery, more than during lung surgery.
But what do I know? I should ask my sister; she’s the responsible adult in the family, and would’ve sat through the pre-op talk.
For my wife’s numerous surgeries, we were always forewarned about the risks, in brief but actual detail, and had to sign documents saying we understood the dangers.
The difference between doctors and witch doctors isn’t as much as doctors think it is.
