My late father was a member of AARP, and he said the government couldn’t end Social Security, because AARP would rally an army of senior citizens to defend their retirements. Looks like my dad was wrong. AARP isn’t worried or bothered as Social Security is ended, so long as it’s ended with promises that it isn’t being ended.

Any sane CPA will tell you these are not ‘audits’. The people making these ‘cuts’ have no legal authority to do so, and no track record of trustworthiness. When the new, unqualified and not-confirmed-by-the-Senate SocSec Commissioner says customer service will be prioritized by closing local offices, it’s not plausible — making seniors drive twice as far, to wait longer to see reduced staff is clearly not about customer service.

The closest the coverage comes to sounding an alarm is the boilerplate sidebar, “Sign up to be an AARP activist and tell your lawmakers to protect Social Security for the hardworking Americans who have earned it…” But these changes are being made by edict, not by Congress, so the old adage ‘Write your Congressman’ is moot.

These sudden, unprecedented, “move fast and break things” changes are intended to sabotage Social Security, and there’s no reason to believe the sabotage will end with what’s been currently announced.

Yet AARP’s reporter shows no skepticism, no worry, offers only reassurance and prints what the SocSec guy says. So my dear old dad was mistaken. Social Security is being dismantled right now, this afternoon, while you’re reading this, and AARP is responding as if it isn’t happening at all.
