The counterculture belongs in a museum.

But first…
WHAT THE HOLY HECK IS HAPPENING?
This website’s migration to new software and servers is scheduled for tomorrow morning, Thursday, October 17, 2024. Comments will be temporarily disabled during the switch, and when it’s done the layout will look different. If all goes well, the entire process should take only a few hours, but let’s get real. When has anything all gone well?

San Francisco’s new Counterculture Museum to tell the story of Haight-Ashbury in the 1960s

How cynical should I be about this? Probably it’ll suck, because almost everything sucks, but jeez if it’s done right a counterculture reminder could be a good thing. We need some counterculture.
This new museum comes from the same guy who runs the Beat Museum in North Beach, which opened some years after I moved away from San Francisco, so I’ve never seen it. Any bay area locals want to chime in, and tell me whether to be optimistic or pessimistic?

I've had to move a few sites in the last few years and I was pleased at how seamless it was. And how fast the DNS propagation was. I'm sure there are some people somewhere who still hit the old server but tbh I saw the shift happen within a matter of minutes, and traffic to the old box died entirely in about an hour. So here's hoping for a smooth transition for ya.

Thanks for the reassurance, which came in handy. It took two days, but I’d say the migration went smoothly. Some of the problems were kinda caused by me, from doing more than the usual customized coding on the old Blogger site.

Now I gotta learn everything about how WordPress works…

Doug, I’m assuming I’m helping by sending in a few comments. If it’s causing headaches, I’ll take my damn hands off the keyboard. I’m trying to make the comments of different lengths with an occasional fucking swear word to help you test. Best of luck. I could never do this and I admire your courage.

    as always,

    John

So far most of my comments disappear like a fist when you open your hand.

The comments are helpful, and it’s a genuine problem. Comments are supposed to appear as soon as you post them, but instead they’re not appearing until I do something behind the scenes, something I shouldn’t have to do.

What I love about it, though, is the ability to open a ticket. Ever tried opening a ticket with Google? It can’t be done.

But I’ve not only opened a ticket, my new host has replied, and they’re working on it!

I guess I can’t blame The Googs for anomalous digital behavior any more. I don’t even know who owns this software, but when I find out I’ll be sure to slur their web reputation. Please don’t answer any of my dumb questions while you’re converting. You have enough to do. Is there any particular kind of comment that would be helpful in figuring out what is/isn’t working? Ha. Don’t answer that unless it would be helpful to you. But I ramble.

Lyrical Host is a company founded by bloggers, supporting WordPress software, which is open-source and owned by a non-profit. It’s not operationally comparable to Google and Blogger.

I will learn its hiccups and limitations and then stop thinking about it, I hope, cuz I want to write, not be a WordPress technician.

The commenting problem, where comments didn’t appear until I nudged them to appear, seems solved, but please let me know if it happens again. 🙂

Great. I haven’t received a ticket since 1967 for going 40 in a 30 marked down to 20 because it was in a school zone and children were present. Hell, I was present and, being 17, a child. I’m always present when I’m there, or try to be. I learned that from Ram Dass early in life and it’s come in handy now and then.

40 in a school zone? Yikes man. That’s almost as scary as someone driving at 17.

Well, it was a Saturday and it was a high school — in fact MY high school. I might have been playing because I did very little work in high school, except for my philosophy class, in which I actually read the recommended material and managed only a B. The philosophy teacher later got fired for teaching the virtues of setting authority’s pants on fire. He was a fine man who dared tell his students that authority figures are generally full of shit. I miss him and little else about high school.

A great teacher makes all the difference. I had one, only one that I remember, and he taught anthropology not philosophy.
