This is a reprint, so the talk of Biden and Trump is outdated, but I’ll stand behind everything else.

I am not hopeful for the long term. In a frightfully near future, modern western society will be ruined, mostly due to climate change and increased feudalism brought about by ongoing weather disasters, environmental wreckage, the end of cheap oil, wars between the world’s many tyrants, and armed confrontations over water and fuel and medicine.

My borderline-beloved USA will probably become a horrid hellhole quicker than other corners of the world, thanks to decades of intensifying efforts by half our leadership to ignore and deny scientific facts, while the other half ignores their opponents’ lies, treats the liars with respect instead of derision, and makes quarter-baked flimsy failed attempts to compromise with the dumbshits on everything.

Black Lives Matter, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Greta Thunberg are among the few positive lights in our present twilight, but the nation and world are under the control of Exxon-Mobil, JPMorgan Chase, Microsoft, and Mitch McConnell, so any action that’s needed is perpetually blocked.

20 years or less and it’s over. That’s my guess, and it’s probably too optimistic. If Donald Trump wins or steals or postpones the election in November, America will be vastly different almost immediately. Even if meek & mild Joe Biden wins, and Trump doesn’t barricade and refuse to leave the White House, it’s impossible to imagine that Biden would, as President, make the full-stop-and-reverse changes needed to right what’s going wrong.

It’s no fun facing facts, sorry, but refusing to is what got us in this mess.

I’m old, and I’ll be gone before the worst of it comes — before the cities are submerged, before speaking out gets you arrested and jailed, before the next nincompoop ignores the next pandemic, etc. Take it as a kindness, please, that I hope you’ll be gone before the worst of it, too.
