Just another dipshit with a gun

My brother texted me yesterday, “Someone’s tried to assassinate Trump.” Best I could reply was, “Well, that’s rude.”

A day later, everyone’s in a frenzy. Republicans, of course, are blaming Joe Biden, because Republicans always have the dumbest response to anything.

And I still have nothing to say about it, except the obvious — killing people is bad, even if the person you’re trying to kill is stupid, mean, and hellbent on destroying America.Killing Trump wouldn’t solve anything — someone else would take his place, and nothing much would change. Or actually, it might change things for the worse, since most Republicans are as evil as Trump but smarter. So put your damned guns away and vote for Biden. He ain’t much, but he’s sane.

Meanwhile, back at things that matter, there’s a brilliant art instillation at a museum in the Netherlands, where the artist Johannes-Harm Hovinga sits at a table all day, and punches holes in the latest UN report on climate change. That’s genuine art, and I am not being ironic.

The IRS “crackdown” on rich tax cheats has brought in a billion dollars — enough to fund the US military for about eight hours.

Trump is now saying he knows nothing about Project 2025, and has no idea who is behind it, so I’ll keep this link handy. It’s Trump, explaining Project 2025 at a Heritage Foundation event, and thanking them for laying the groundwork for his next administration.

Speaking of the Heritage Foundation, here’s their top blogger, responding to the furry hackers that swiped two gigabytes of data: “Are you aware that you won’t be able to wear a furry tiger costume when you’re getting pounded in the ass in the federal prison I put you in?”

Republicans lie about everything, of course, and it’s just another lie when Republicans in Congress swear to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.”Rep Jim Banks (R-Indiana) is a Republican in Congress who’s running for the Senate, but can’t say whether he’s for or against armed rebellion.

Next, another piece of news so ordinary it’s boring to even report it. Just another giant company having a data hack, exposing private data from millions of customers. ① It’s almost always customer data that gets leaked, but rarely internal accounting or the company’s own financial secrets. This suggests that companies know full-well how to keep information secure from hackers, but that level of security is for the executives, not the customers. And ②, the data hacks will continue until the regulatory penalty becomes expensive enough to actually damage a company’s bottom line.

There’s enough evidence to prosecute Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas for his flamboyant ongoing corruption. All that’s lacking is a pair of balls on Attorney General Merrick Garland. Garland was Barack Obama’s nominee for the Supreme Court, not because Garland is liberal — he’s not, and never was. His nomination for SCOTUS was a compromise pick, because Obama thought Senate Republicans wouldn’t object to someone as bland as warm yogurt. But oops, Republicans don’t compromise, and Garland never even got a hearing. Then comes President Joe Biden, who nominates the same compromise guy as Attorney General. Why? Garland put off prosecuting Trump for a couple of years for no known reason, and now the pile of yogurt isn’t going to do squat about blatant corruption on the Supreme Court.

In California and (not quite) Minnesota, cops are no longer allowed to pull cars over and start the conversation with the bullshit line, “Do you know why I’ve pulled you over?“

The most irksome thing about Trump's ear ache is all the important people, the people that matter, the people who are axed to comment on the ear ache, all these people spit the same nonsense: 'there's no place for violence in America.' Huh? If there's a place for anything in America, it's violence. It's on every street corner, in every home, in every school, fast food restaurant, 7-Eleven, even in the air space on the planes. There's always been a place for violence in America. America would not exist without violence. Without violence America would be a pleasant version of Africa, red and brown folks laboring in semi-contentment for their European masters.

Mark Rudd of the SDS/Weather Org was in a doc about the Weatherman where he made the observation (repeated in his pretty good book) that the vast majority of people in America are conditioned to believe that any violence that *doesn't* come from the state is either criminal or mentally ill. Nothing in between. And he could do anything he wanted — talk to them, publish pamphlets, propaganda of the deed, posters that read "SILENCE = VIOLENCE" — you couldn't change their mind on it. I think I can come up with some examples proving otherwise (John Brown) but only a few, and there are many more who are rehabilitated only as cartoons.

Yup, America could not exist without violence. It's the fundamental. You and I wouldn't be here and wouldn't exist if not for hundreds of years of violence that (almost literally) paved the way. America is so violent, it takes three killings to qualify as a "mass killing" so this wasn't even that.

And people are hyperventilating as if it matters that Trump got nicked in the ear. Cheeze, I'm a lot more aggravated by the next school shooter.

Seems accurate: The vast majority of Americas believe any violence that *doesn't* come from the state is either criminal or mentally ill. And any violence that *does* come from the state is justified.

Trying to get people to see past that indoctrination is tilting at windmills, usually. Takes a hell of a lot to convince people, and even if you can, it's only a one-time exception — next morning they'll believe again, any violence that *doesn't* come from the state is bad, and any violence that *does* come from the state is good.

If I was a better man, I'd seek out that book by Rudd, but I'm old and lazy so I went to IMDB and put all the documentaries he's in onto my watchlist.

Couple years ago I went down a weird rabbit hole because I heard Arthur Bremer, the failed assassin of George Wallace, has been out of jail for years and living a quiet life in, I think, Maryland. Found out that he just wanted to murder someone important, couldn't get to Nixon and took out Wallace instead. Both those guys had much more than that coming to them but the failed assassin had no ideology behind it. A few years later it might have been John Lennon. And the further you dig into the subject — Mark David Chapman, Squeaky Fromme — the more you find that's true. It was a meme at the time to murder someone powerful. Then these anti-ideological assassins became workplace shooters became public mass shooters. American society that breeds anti-social lunatics who want to murder. We're probably not the only one but we're the only one that combines this toxicity with easy access to high powered weaponry and a high standard of living (so there are many soft targets).

So it was interesting to hear this kid compared to school shooters based on the very sketchy info to emerge (which is often wrong. Almost everything about the Columbine killers was wrong but much of it still persists to this day.) Maybe this is the next phase, some mutant remix of the past obsessions of these types.

America gets lots of crazy people because America is a crazy place. The only surprise is that we don't have *more* crazies and killings. Become famous by killing someone famous! Whee!

Yeah, this next phase is going to be ugly indeed. America's standard insanity and violence + Republican lies and repression + Democrats who melt at Republicans' demands + climate emergency + the next pandemic + the ongoing "great economy" that never reaches below middle class.

I'm pleased to hear that Artie Bremer was released from prison. Hadn't known that, and I'm a believer in rehabilitation so it's good news. Googling tells me he's on probation until next year, when he'll be 75 years old. Wonder what he thinks of what's going on.
