• New claims that WW2 Pope Pius XII knew about Nazi crimes

I
thought that the Pope's complicity was already established and widely
known. Feels like something I've been aware of for thirty years, at
least.
Maybe I just have a knack for the extremely obvious.

There are areas of the USA where what Boebert and her man are doing on video could land them both on the sex offenders' list for life. She has her hand on der wienerschnitzel, he has his on her boobies, in a crowded theater during a show.
I've done the same, but in the balcony at a movie theater, with no-one else within a dozen rows. And I was in my late teens, and not a member of Congress.

• Someone I'd never heard of is getting the hell out of country music — she's tired of fighting the genre's racism and misogyny

[Excerpt:] "I didn't think of myself as a political artist. I just wrote songs about real life through a lens of deep respect for my country heroes. But the further you get into the country music business, that's when you start to see the cracks. And once you see it, you can't un-see it. So you start doing everything you can with the little power you have to make things better."

Cranky Old Fart is annoyed and complains and very occasionally offers a kindness, along with anything off the internet that's made me smile or snarl. All opinions fresh from my ass. Top illustration by Jeff Meyer. Click any image to enlarge. Comments & conversations invited.

Long time ago I worked for an attorney who was leading a class action against the Vatican Bank. It kinda almost worked! I read a lot about Pius XII. One of the biggest problems was that in Italy it was (maybe still is) legal to sue on behalf of the dead. Every time these stories were published in Italy showing Pius' knowledge of the Holocaust and turning a blind eye to Fascist brutality out of anti-communism, some relative of his (a niece I think) would sue the author for defaming the dead pope.
ReplyDeleteRobert Katz wrote 3 books about it over 30 years, his last being "The Battle of Rome" (which is very readable just as an adventure story really) and was found guilty of having defamed Pius. The case bounced around until it was, I guess, just kind of mooted by judges but not in a way that exonerated him:

Defaming the dead? Leave it to the church to come up with such a fricasseed notion. They'd still be burning us at the stake if they could.
ReplyDeleteHow does that work, though? Why would Katz show up for a trial in Vatican City? Surely the USA doesn't honor extraction from the Catholic Church...
Oh also, thanks for the Pathe site. What a cool repository of old stuff...
