• 15,000 scientists warn society could 'collapse' this century in dire climate report
Perhaps I live in a bubble of pessimism, but — isn't this well-known, and essentially a certainty?
• Buffy Sainte-Marie is apparently not, as she's always claimed, Cree or Canadian
There's a helpful discussion of this at MetaFilter.
One can hope, but… I'd be amazed.
• NHL rescinds ban on Pride Tape after Coyotes' Travis Dermott uses it vs. Ducks
Once in a while, sanity prevails. The NHL's still dead to me, though.
• Finally someone said it — and it's Trump
Trump: "And
we moved the capital of Israel to Jerusalem. That’s for the
Evangelicals. You know, it’s amazing with that: the Evangelicals are
more excited by that than Jewish people."
• Richard Roundtree and the critical dismissal of black action cinema
• Complaints stop the 'wrapped' ads on Washington State Ferries
• Millions of baby birds are dying from extreme heat
• The history of the electric car is surprisingly enraging
• What happens in Pinecraft stays in Pinecraft: Where the Amish vacation
• What's an orphan-crushing machine?
• Taiwan's "down-to-earth" Halloween parties
• Amusing, Interesting, Outrageous, or Profound
This is my Lemmy page, for anything that's (in my opinion) amusing, interesting, outrageous, or profound. It's mostly a rough draft of this page, but you're invited to stop by.
📢 AUDIO 🎤
• CounterSpinProduced by FAIR (Fairness & Accuracy in Reporting), I've been listening to this half-hour weekly newscast since at least the 1990s. It's always valuable to me, and it's never changed. Same format. Same opening music. Same host, Janine Jackson, who has a remarkable ability to say more than the text simply with her tone of voice.
• Over the Edge
This is a weekly three-hour "audio collage," mixing music and sounds from wherever and also anywhere else.
No music is allowed to play without being mixed with other nonsense, so it's an anti-music show. I listen about once monthly, never closely, and fast-forward through most of it and laugh at the rest. It's good in short bursts, especially when I'm in a bad mood.
• Sleep Baseball
I've
linked to Sleep Baseball before, but it demands a rerun. It's fake
play-by-play for minor league baseball games never played, with
announcers and ads so boring it puts me to sleep by the second inning. (And that's the intent.)

Cranky Old Fart is annoyed and complains and very occasionally offers a kindness, along with anything off the internet that's made me smile or snarl. All opinions fresh from my ass. Top illustration by Jeff Meyer. Click any image to enlarge. Comments & conversations invited.
Tip 'o the hat to the AVA, BoingBoing, Breakfast at Ralf's, Kottke, org, Looking for My Perfect Sandwich, MetaFilter, Miss Miriam's Mirror, RanPrieur.com, @soberscientistlife, Voenix Rising, and anywhere else I've stolen links, illustrations, or inspiration.
Special thanks to Linden Arden, Becky Jo, Wynn Bruce, Joey Jo Jo emeritus, John the Basket, Dave S, Name Withheld, and always extra special thanks to my lovely late Stephanie, who gave me 21 years and proved that the world isn't always shitty.
Re. "Over the Edge:" nice ambient music of a unique sort. A similar radio channel is "SOMA FM 10-33" which describes itself as "Ambient music mixed with the sounds of San Francisco public safety radio traffic." It's really nice, I start my mornings with it!

doug took the day off maybe, but this link is way cool. thank you.
DeleteThanks, Mr Zeke. Somafm seems like not only the same sort of thing, but they do it better. And 24/7 apparently?
DeleteAnony, I did not take the day off. I spent it watching more movies to be reviewed, so it was unpaid labor.
