Special thanks to Linden Arden, Becky Jo, Wynn Bruce, Joey Jo Jo, John the Basket, Dave S, Name Withheld, and always extra special thanks to my lovely late Stephanie, who gave me 21 years and proved that the world isn't always shitty.
Reddit is doing some stupid things and its biting them in the butt, and I remembe rthat you used to post on Reddit so of course you're interested. To me it's just another company being run stupid by its stupid management. To be expected.
ReplyDeleteIt is and it is.
DeleteI've been on Reddit for... I really don't know, 15 years? Lots of good times. I've probably spent at least an hour there, most days. But yeah, since it's always been a business, watching it turn to shit is "to be expected."
Dougles, in honor of what must be the completion of your last working day on Fantasy Island, we should pull out the old Victrola and play the Dylan song about working for the woman, Maggie's Farm. Here are the lyrics, followed by a link to the melody. Congrats. . . .
ReplyDeleteMaggie's Farm
by Bob Dylan
I ain’t gonna work on Maggie’s farm no more
No, I ain’t gonna work on Maggie’s farm no more
Well, I wake in the morning
Fold my hands and pray for rain
I got a head full of ideas
That are drivin’ me insane
It’s a shame the way she makes me scrub the floor
I ain’t gonna work on Maggie’s farm no more
I ain’t gonna work for Maggie’s brother no more
No, I ain’t gonna work for Maggie’s brother no more
Well, he hands you a nickel
He hands you a dime
He asks you with a grin
If you’re havin’ a good time
Then he fines you every time you slam the door
I ain’t gonna work for Maggie’s brother no more
I ain’t gonna work for Maggie’s pa no more
No, I ain’t gonna work for Maggie’s pa no more
Well, he puts his cigar
Out in your face just for kicks
His bedroom window
It is made out of bricks
The National Guard stands around his door
Ah, I ain’t gonna work for Maggie’s pa no more
I ain’t gonna work for Maggie’s ma no more
No, I ain’t gonna work for Maggie’s ma no more
Well, she talks to all the servants
About man and God and law
Everybody says
She’s the brains behind pa
She’s sixty-eight, but she says she’s twenty-four
I ain’t gonna work for Maggie’s ma no more
I ain’t gonna work on Maggie’s farm no more
No, I ain’t gonna work on Maggie’s farm no more
Well, I try my best
To be just like I am
But everybody wants you
To be just like them
They sing while you slave and I just get bored
I ain’t gonna work on Maggie’s farm no more

That's one of a lot of songs I've heard countless times, but never gave a serious listen to until years later. It sure didn't mean much to me when I wasn't even shaving yet, let alone working.
DeleteCame to mean more to me later, and I have a cover in my playlist. You'll disagree perhaps or probably, but Maggie's Farm is one of those songs Dylan wrote so well but mangled when he sang it.
I just can't imagine anybody else singing it. It's off Bring It All Back Home, the first of his famous 14 month trilogy. There were a couple of lousy songs on those three albums, but not many. I think he sings it well, but I was sold on that idea when I was 15. Like many of Dylan's mid-60s songs, it's an echo of a song written and recorded 40 years earlier. I think Pat Boone had a lovely cover. You might give that a try.
Deletelove,
John
I know the names of Dylan's albums -- I just can't type. The album is Bringing It All Back Home. Like calling the bible the bibble. Worse, because it's Dylan.

I kinda love covers of classics. Take a song you've heard a thousand times, give it to someone else to perform (preferably someone with talent), and the result can be grand.
